FOUNDED 1904
SL Benfica was founded on February 28, 1904, in Lisbon, Portugal, under the name Sport Lisboa. The club was established by a group of 24 founders, including Cosme Damião, who became a key figure in its early development. In 1908, Sport Lisboa joined forces with Grupo Sport Benfica, adopting the name Sport Lisboa e Benfica. From its modest beginnings in Lisbon’s Belém district, Benfica grew into one of Portugal’s most successful football clubs. Its European Cup victories in 1961 and 1962 established its place among Europe’s leading teams and remain defining moments in the club’s history
