Benfica’s back-to-back European Cup victories in 1961 and 1962 remain two of the greatest achievements in the club’s history.
1961
FIRST EUROPEAN CUP
On 31 May 1961, Benfica defeated Barcelona 3–2 at the Wankdorf Stadium in Bern to win their first European Cup. Led by coach Béla Guttmann, they became the first Portuguese club to win the competition.
1962
SECOND EUROPEAN CUP
On 2 May 1962, Benfica defeated Real Madrid 5–3 at the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam to retain the European Cup. Eusébio scored twice as Benfica secured their second consecutive European title.
